Of Sand, Light and Dance

by Noor Jehan Mecklai
Sema (2021), Oil on canvas, 48 × 36 in · 122 × 91 cm, by Bandah Ali

Reviewing the Colours of Life show at ArtOne62 in Lahore, Noor Jehan Mecklai describes Thari women dancing, shown with their moods and facial expressions, in bright gaghras and embroidered blouses, with bangles and silver jewellery.

She singles out two works in which light falls from above, linking one to Sufi imagery of uniting with the Divine, and notes how the desert sand is stylised as it is stirred by dancing feet and how arm movements fill the negative space of an archway.

The artist, she records, started doodling at the age of nine, and has focused on Sindhi culture, portraits and landscapes from the start.
